    @causalinf I think this is where the (very) different recruitment system between France and the US explain the different: the French system is much more centralized, the salaries are nationally defined (and non-negotiable) as well as the rules for career advancement!

      @causalinf And because the rules for advancement are *voted*, it means that the values of the majority (the non-top institutions) can be translated into actual rules, and ultimately incentives.
