    1. I will significantly change my Twitter feed in the upcoming weeks. Being on @twitter these days feel extremely toxic and unpleasant for me, so I need to take some severe actions to (at least) try to change that. Thread ⤵️

The overall philosophy of this is to make Twitter more social, aka more about interacting with interesting people. After all, Twitter is a *social* media, isn't it? I miss the discussions I've had in the past with a lot of interesting people, and I want them back.

I don't know what will work, and what will not, but at least I know what I'm gonna try. And I will adjust accordingly.

First, I will unfollow most of the institutional or news accounts, I will only follow "real" people. I never read tweets coming from these institutions, so I will probably be better off getting rid of all of them altogether.

On a side note, I am also looking for a solution to get only "headline news" like once a day or something, through RSS (email is not an option). I have too much information to deal with on a daily basis, and I need to cut it through pretty hard. Still looking though.

Also on a side note, some of those "institutional" accounts are now on my RSS reader – aka News Explorer by @elemanssoftware. I feel more comfortable reading this kind of stuff on a RSS reader instead of on a "social" media. If you are interested, I can provide more details.

Regarding economics institution, I already created two lists dedicated to gather econ departments and research centers, both in France and in the US. See twitter.com/simardcasanova/lists for more details.

Regarding people, I will unfollow the vast majority of people I don't personally know. For researchers, I also created two lists, one for France, one for the US. See again this URL for more details: twitter.com/simardcasanova/lists

I will also continue to apply @Noahpinion's rule of blocking assholes as a way to moderate my feed: it may not delete the already published offensive tweets, but at least it prevents more of those to get published *on my own backyard*.

I currently follow ~750 accounts, my goal is to fall around 300. It's a 60% decrease, which is *huge*. But I believe it's doable (see next tweet). I follow too many people, I lost track on who is who. I need to change that.

(I already applied a similar strategy on my @instagram account. My rule of thumb was: can I remember who this person is? If the answer was "no", I unfollowed. I managed to obtain a similar decrease of ~ -60%. And a more meaningful Instagram feed too!)

I believe I did not forget anything. Oh, yes I did: I deactivated retweets on the vast majority of the accounts I follow, and I will continue to do so. In my quest for interactions, I want to hear directly from what people I follow say, not what they "repeat" w/o comments.

With all their algorithms, social networks and social media don't feel human (anymore). I basically want more meaningful interactions. Twitter can be a great tool, but it felt poorly managed in the last few years, as is @facebook tbh.

I will probably keep you updated in the upcoming weeks, especially if I decide to deviate from the plan explained here. If you hear nothing back, it's probably because it worked! I keep a bunch of references on social media (incl. this thread) here: wiki.simardcasanova.net/internet/social-media
