              1. Twitter is a great place for "angry" people to shout their opinions. But with only a few words. Which leads to *a lot* of misunderstandings. Expand ⤵️

Imagine you have a cause you defend because you genuinely believe it’ll help to make the world a better place. And then you see a few words that *may* looks like they go the other way around this very cause. You’ll fight for your cause, right?

But now assume people only have a few words to express their idea. No time to explain. Plus this tendency of Twitter to make people use punchlines instead of thoughtful comments. Are you sure the words you read actually expressed the idea you believe they expressed?

Now imagine you put a huge number of people with a cause and only a few words to defend it in one huge single place. You basically have Twitter. How many fights over there are caused by misunderstandings? Probably *a lot*.

I wouldn’t say Twitter is the worst place to debate, because thoughtful debates can take place here. But the way the average discussion is done here is one of the worst possible kind of "discussion".

(And I believe that @jack and many more are kind of OK with this: angry people come on Twitter more often, and see more ads. It’s somehow good for business, at least in the short run. In other words, Twitter has a weak incentive to stop this kind of "shouting".)

So what if instead of defending the cause right after we see a seemingly offensive tweet, we take a few minutes to ask the people who wrote the offensive tweet to be sure we got it right? I’m sure it’ll help pacify Twitter quite a lot.

Even worse, we could even discover that we actually have more in common than we thought, and learn and grow from each other’s experience and stuff. What a hideous experience it would be... (But I don’t believe it’ll happen...) /end
