@O_Goss_ @ben_golub @DinaPomeranz @SZignago @Trevornoah Identities are not precisely defined. In this case, what "African" really means? It’s far from obvious, especially because depending on who gives the definition, the definition might be different.

@O_Goss_ @ben_golub @DinaPomeranz @SZignago @Trevornoah I may be wrong but it seems to me that in his initial remarks, Noah was speaking about people who live in Africa, who identify themselves with part of the French team, instead of the players.

@O_Goss_ @ben_golub @DinaPomeranz @SZignago @Trevornoah Identity is all about perception. Sure, the team does not identify as "African", but it does not prevent other people to identify themselves with some players because of their ascent, place of birth or skin color.

@O_Goss_ @ben_golub @DinaPomeranz @SZignago @Trevornoah In other words (sorry it’s a bit hard to explain this in English), I think Noah was referring to the people in Africa who see this team as "African" and derive pride for its achievement, and not to the players. At least this is how I understood his initial remarks.
