          1. Update: my decision not to seek an academic job hasn’t changed, it’s even the contrary. That being said, I may have been too quick on the « quitting science » side of it. Thread ⤵️ @simardcasanova/1007950630927859713

The fact is, I seriously investigate the possibility to work part time as an « independent » researcher, alongside my future job.

My rationale is the following: publish or perish has some good sides, but a lot of bad sides too. It incentives to publish often, not meaningfully. The more I advanced with my PhD, the more I realized I need time to come up with my best ideas.

I don’t want the research I put my name on not to reflect who I am. I don’t want to align papers that no one will never read.

I got awards during my PhD. I am surrounded by senior researchers who kept saying I would fully fit in an academic job (scientifically speaking). But I don’t want the pressure, the double binds, the teaching, the fight for literally everything, the politics. It’s distractions.

I love doing science, and I don’t want to ruin that. This is why I decided not to stay in academia. Which is a bit odd, as academia is allegedly the place where science is produced… But 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don’t even want to make money from my future research. I’ve been raised in an ideology of material frugality, I have no interest in owning a large house, a big car, wearing the most expansive outfit or whatever. I am a man of simple needs. I don’t need millions.

I can also self-fund this activity, as I don’t need expansive material or anything similar. Just a robust computer and some plane tickets to attend conferences here and there.

Is it possible to pursue a meaningful scientific activity in these conditions? I think it is, but obviously time will tell.

That being said, the more I drove my PhD according to what I believed was the best for me, the more I have been successful - and happy. And everything inside me screams *not* to go with academia. I guess I better listen. I have no reasons not to listen.

Last but not least, not having an academic job anymore doesn’t mean breaking up with academia. I’ll continue to attend seminars, workshops, conferences. The only difference is that I will only choose depending on my interest or whatever.

I am quite an independent person, I am not afraid to have to deal with everything by my own. Could even be the contrary actually, that I like it!

I obviously will keep you informed. But for now, I still have a thesis to write. So let’s back to work!
