          1. I just read a fascinating experimental paper that provided its data and code. The problem? The authors used Stata, a proprietary software that costs *at least* $600… (see by yourself: stata.com/order/new/edu/single-user-licenses/) And as I don't have a Stata licence, I can't replicate the results.

          Proprietary softwares are at odds with open science. Plus the fact they are (usually very) expansive puts unnecessary financial constraints to universities and research centers.

        To me, open source softwares are the *only* option compatible with open science. Use R, use Python, use Julia, use CSV and LibreOffice. Don't use Stata, don't use Matlab, don't use Excel.

      (Of course, if there's no open source equivalent, use the proprietary software. But don't use a propritery software when an open source alternative exists!)
