  1. If PhD students were a net cost for universities, why would so many universities keep recruiting so many of them? If a large number of organizations take the same decision again and again, maybe it’s because the cost-benefit analysis is pretty clear

      PhD students do research, assist both research and teaching From an university, an organization literally dedicated to research and teaching, those things seem pretty valuable to me…

        Just for teaching, I’d be curious to see the share of the teaching load (counted in hours) that is assumed by PhD students in various universities My guess is: it’s probably a significant share
