          1. SO! We’re tomorrow… I just sent to a client a report putting an end to what is likely my last gig as an indie data science consultant 🥳 Starting from tomorrow, I will focus on building a living out of my writing – something I wanted to do since I’m a teenager 🧵 @simardcasanova/1487901570079596548

A major component of this endeavour is my newsletter – you can read it and subscribe here ➡️ notes.osc.ac My French speaking newsletter about economics @EcoSceptique will also play a key role

But by “writing”, I have a bit more in mind than just newsletters I also have plans to write online courses, and the first one will be focused on one of my biggest crush ever — R (R > men btw, but that’s a story for a different thread)

I also already launched two other French speaking newsletters, one dedicated to explain US politics using political science (@HeureAmericaine) and a second one dedicated to North American public transit (@2100Cities) – yes, I am a HUGE transit nerd 🚊

My current strategy is to try multiple things in order to minimize the risk of failure And thanks to more than a year of various behind-the-scene optimizations based on exploiting economies of scale, I feel 100% capable of running all these projects in parallel 🔥

The last part of this pivot will involve some scientific stuff I have NOT given up on doing research. I’m currently working on a new research project and I can’t wait to share more details about it! But there’s more…

Most, if not all, of my newsletters are somehow based on a scientific field – economics and political science I want to create a scientific ecosystem around me where I can learn a lot about the stuff I’m nerding about — and I hope to announce a couple of things soon 👀

Some of these future annoucements are also built to give a platform and shed light on works and people we don’t pay attention enough in economics — and elsewhere

I decided to take this turn during the first waves of COVID My professional life was stalling, and I don’t know why but COVID turned me into a “why the hell I’m not doing the things I wanted to do for decades?” mode And here I am today!

The last important thing is that leaving academia gave me a blank sheet At first, it was a bit challenging as I didn’t had an already existing template to follow But now that I know myself more and have gained some experience, this blank sheet is a major opportunity

Despite not being in an university position and despite having no scientific affiliation anymore, I’m convinced I’ll be able to build a richer and more thriving scientific ecosystem around me that if I had stayed in academia

Imagine a life without department meetings, no funding applications, no (or very limited) bureaucracy, total freedom in the way I use my money — and so on Removing all of this from my professional life has been a *huge* timesaver already – and gave me room to explore *a ton*

And thanks to modern technology, it’s now easier than ever to connect with scholars all over the world, and to build a solid scientific ecosystem without the backing of a huge institution like an university

I want to experiment, I want to try new things, I want to learn, discuss and enjoy myself I want to create the kind of life I always wanted to live, and today is a MAJOR step in that direction! (And yes, Canada is still on my radar 🇨🇦)

I’m super excited to finally take this turn, and I can’t wait to see what will come next! Thanks to every single one of you for being there – and don’t forget to subscribe to my newsletter to not miss what will come next! notes.osc.ac
