    1. To my Australian friends: how do you analyze this submarine stuff? It seems that both the US and Australia vastly underestimated how badly France would react. Was it intentional, or a bad assessment of the French position?

    I get that Australia wanted to form an alliance against China but France clearly showed a commitment to the Indo-Pacific region *and* a willingness to work in good faith with Australia This relationship is probably now obliterated

      France itself isn’t much, but I have no doubt other EU nations will now be extremely reluctant to work with Australia on defense stuff But maybe Australia doesn’t really care about that?

        (I also don’t understand how the US pushes Europe to go tougher on China on one hand, and literally throws the most involved European country under the bus on the other. Maybe Biden and Blinken aren’t as competent as what I thought.)
