        1. Is the “republican front” only a thing in France? Aka during an election where the far right is in position to win, all candidates except the one with the highest score during the first round dismiss themselves for the runoff

It’s highly controversial, and in my opinion for good reasons It’s only a *tactical* response to the far right, without ever addressing the root cause of its resurgence

And contrary to what one might think, it is not a “grand coalition” thing Usually, the candidate who win the election governs for their political side, aka somebody from the right will go for a right-wing agenda, and conversely for somebody from the left

There is also a stream of opinion polls that show that the electorate is increasingly less keen to accept a republican front In the right, because there is a porosity between the right and the far right In the left, because people are tired to vote for the right

Albeit not a republican front per see, this is how Macron won in 2017 with a 62% score against Le Pen N’wadays, polls only measure a 5-ish points difference between them for the upcoming election 2022

Some polls even alarmed Macron’s party, because they showed a deep rebuke from left-leaning voters of his candidacy – when they expected these voters to “naturally” vote for them in 2022
