@foco_seann So once again, just a data point! What works for me is simple stuff, such as "do something because you find it interesting or important" I tried a ton of "motivation techniques", and the only one that consistently worked was this one

@foco_seann The key for me (that I found with the help of my therapist) is to do things that are aligned with who I am as a person It’s not just the kind of tasks in general, but also the "how". It’s obvi just me but for instance I take much more pleasure in a task when…
-
@foco_seann …I use tools I love to do the task in question. It works for stuff like my emails, blogging/the newsletter, task management, and so on. It works wonders to keep doing tasks that are super interesting, but that you are still required to do for whatever reason
-
@foco_seann Deep down, what fits with my personality is playing, doing stuff that amuse me When I started my PhD I really was on a "I should do X because I have to" mode and it didn’t work. Going for "how can I make X interesting and fun" did work!
-
@foco_seann Sorry it’s a bit long but I forgot to mention the importance of incremental experimentation: try something and see if it works for you, and based on the result, adapt. And repeat! This is how I slowly built habits where my motivation is so powerful!

@foco_seann For me, "it works" also involves the impact it has on my mental health and my work-life balance, not just the job itself And this system is also good as it normalize "failure". And taught me it’s ok to fail as long as you learn something for it.
