          1. I’m slowly coming back to my research. It will take a bit of time, especially to deal with all the logistics – and also mentally. But one bet I made was that being outside academia was a better setting to do *more* research, and *better aligned with my preferences* @simardcasanova/1382280558873612288

It’s still a work in progress, but basically: - no faculty-ish meetings, very minimal administrative tasks (as a freelancer) - I need to buy something? I just do it. Zero paperwork involved. - I don’t teach, but I do write about econ for a general public audience

Luckily, as a theorist my research activity involves very little costs – so it’s probably sustainable Also, my research time is basically what’s left after I did everything else. Probably one, if not two, days a week – with *great* work-life balance.

And because my research activity is very loosely tied to an academic institution, I can live anywhere I want. No need to compromise. No need to say goodbye to my dating life (as a gay man) to take an offer is a small city with basically no local gay scene.

The revenue part is not settled yet, but I’m pretty confident I can make a decent amount of money with my newsletter(s). And getting paid to write and do a bit of data journalism is literally the best thing I could wish for professionally!

I will probably face a couple of harsh upcoming months (financially speaking), but overall I’m pretty confident I’ve laid the foundations for a professional arrangement that fits quite well my preferences. Much, much better than academia!

On the “why being outside academia is better for my research”, the answer is quite simple: - less cognitive load on other things - and most importantly, I can take all the time I want to nurture my ideas. Something that, in my opinion, is really missing in today's academia
