One of the first feedback I’ve ever received at the beginning of my PhD was literally "you cannot expect more than a mediocre career" Then why would I put any substantial effort to do a good PhD then, if regardless of my effort I’m doomed to a "mediocre career"?

Sometimes it feels like I didn’t had a chance, as if the occasion to show to the world and to myself what I’m capable of as a potential researcher never really materialized during my PhD It’s frustrating as hell, and I’m not sure I made peace with this – yet
