The worst-ish thing about this was the self-fulfilling prophecy aspect It destroyed my fragile self-confidence and when I realized I actually had some potential as a researcher, it was already too late for me to consider an academic career that I would have been OK with

The only options I was offered were bad either for my self confidence or for my mental health I took the decision to leave academia post-defense, but my options to stay were objectively very limited. So I decided to make the most of this bad situation.

All of this happened a couple of years ago, I’m fine now 🙂 But I’m still struggling with what I want to do scientifically speaking. I got prizes, I got recommendations, I got a bunch of signals that I may have interesting things to say – as a researcher.

But I will soon be mostly outside of academia. My initial plan was to keep doing some research as an independent researcher, but I'm not sure it worths it. Even if I'm kind of frustrated that I never had a chance to share my "biggest" ideas with the econ community.

Also, the logistics behind being an independent researcher are not that easy – but I still believe it was/is the best option for me (subject to quite severe constraints)
