          1. I do econ popularization since 2015 One day I made a video criticizing planned obsolescence An AP from a major-ish French university sparked a discussion in the YT comments. We disagreed. He then threatened to destroy my job prospects on the French academic job market. 1/6

The threat was obviously kind of veiled. But after a couple of years navigating academia, you know what’s a legitimate misunderstanding and what’s a threat. I confronted him directly about this, and he backed off, in a "no I didn’t not threatened you" way 2/

When this happened I already had decided to leave academia, but imagine if I was still looking for it. I would have been absolutely terrified. Which was probably the whole point: how dare a PhD student disagree with an AP from this place? He, of course, never apologized 3/

The goal was not to discuss with me, but to shut down criticism. And I didn’t know this guy! Now that I’m thinking about it, I hope he doesn’t have any PhD or master student. Because if he’s threatening strangers on YouTube, it’s probably worse with people he has power on. 4/

After discussing the issue with a friend, the friend in question was able to identify him. He found his resume online. Not a lot of publications. Which is fine. I want to share this story to highlight that the problem does not always come from the top. 5/

There is very damaging things that happen everywhere Only focusing on toxic "top" people would leave *a lot* of blind spots People at non-top institutions are already considered nobodys because of this toxic elitism. Don’t make it worse in our fight for a healthier econ. 6/6
