      1. I think having open DMs as an out LGBTQ person is important enough to make a separate thread It also echoes great remarks @NWPapageorge made during the LGBTQ luncheon 1/ @simardcasanova/1214035881150926849

So far, my policy was to have close DMs *but* to follow back every grad student who followed me I had mixed experience in the past with open DMs and my goal was to find a middle ground between being easily reachable and keeping my DMs clean 2/

But a lot of people are very deep in the closet, and even the simple act of following someone who’s out can be too much I need to think about this a little more, but basically my question is now "how" instead of "if" 3/

And as @causalinf said this morning, it’s probably not that hard to keep your DMs clean And as @MarthaOlney said, if it’s triggering, our best friend is the delete button. I guess it also applies to DMs! 4/

Even though I’m technically still a grad student, I will soon be on the other side of the barrier, and I want to help provide to the newer generations of LGBTQ students the public goods I didn’t have when I started my PhD in 2012 FIN (but to be continued…) 5/
