          1. In France, academic econ is literally publish or perish: if you don’t have a publication during your PhD, you have ZERO chance on the job market It’s a major reason why I left: I’ve seen too many PhD students sacrifying a good paper for the sake of having one publication @EDACournot/1182266942738055170

I may be a perfectionist, but I won’t accept any job where my work is undervalued for the sake of some stupid bureaucratic rule And more recently, PhDs who published with their supervisor were even barred to go on the market. This is sick.

Other reasons why I left French academia: - low wages (~1800€/month for a beginner AP) - poor working conditions: huge administrative burden, budget by student is decreasing - roughly no time to do research (when you’re AP) unless on your weekends/holidays - no recognition

Oh, I also forgot to mention that when an university wants to interview you for an AP job, *you* pay for everything (hostel, train, food…). And of course it’s just an interview, so you may not get the job at the end. A lot of people have to borrow money for those "trips"…

(And bear in mind that in some circumstances, the position has already been filed behind the scene. But the law requires the interviews to take place. 5-6 people will then pay for the trip out of their own pockets *not knowing* they have zero chances to land the job.)
