            1. I’m sorry but: what the hell is this paper? 😱 TL;DR: the NBER released a working paper where two (white) economists equated French immigrants with… Black and Hispanic Americans. So once again: what. The. Hell? @graykimbrough/1135689318020857857

Immigrants are migrants. Black and Hispanic Americans are American citizens with a different skin color. Tell me how you can infer any meaningful similarities between those groups? And I honestly don’t want to dive into the ugly implicits at play here 🤢

I’m no applied econometrician but dammit, even me I can see the flaws. And it’s published in the damn NBER WP Series. It’s probably one of the worst applied paper ever. In the NBER. I just can’t.

Those hierarchies are killing economics. The lack of diversity is killing economics. Such a poorly designed paper can’t even be considered as "science". I would call it garbage, and I don’t care if it comes from two established guys.

If we’re in a field where we can’t vehemently criticize some really bad work because it was made by high profile researchers, it’s not science. It’s worshipping. And I’ve been trained as a freaking scientist, not a worshipper.

This paper proves why we need a more open and more diverse economics. On top of being an equal opportunity issue, the lack of openness and diversity is also detrimental to the very substance of what we do. WE. NEED. AN. OPEN. AND. DIVERSE. ECONOMICS.

Oh, and by the way: French law explicitely ban collecting any racial, ethnical or religious data. There is *zero* chance you will find a dataset with information about Black French people. (If you want to know why, google « régime de Vichy ».)

(You have no idea how hard it is to use "hell" instead of the f*** word. This thread is the most diplomatic version I was able to write. But inside, this is how I feel ⤵️)
