    @johnkroencke It happened after Chernobyl in Europe, as explained in this piece: forbes.com/sites/michaelshellenberger/2019/05/09/the-reason-they-fictionalize-nuclear-disasters-like-chernobyl-is-because-they-kill-so-few-people/ The psycho-social costs probably caused more harm than the accident itself. I don’t see why it would be different for mass shootings or terrorist attacks.

      @johnkroencke Plus (as I wrote yesterday [in French] here: ecosceptique.simardcasanova.net/mur/pourquoi-nous-surestimons-le-bilan-humain-des-accidents-nucleaires/), the government tends to overreact to appease scared citizens. Again in France, you now have soldiers patrolling cities on a daily basis: it is inefficient, costly, and utterly boring for them.

        @johnkroencke I’m pretty sure those overreactions also cost a lot, especially in terms of opportunity cost of taxpayers’ money. (Even though, in the case of mass shootings in the US, one could difficultly argue that there have been an "overreaction" by the government…)
