  1. Today was holiday in France (end of WWII). Despite the rain I managed to visit: - a former iron mine, eye opening experience on what it meant to be a miner in 1860 - a gallo-roman amphitheater & mosaic - Joan of Arc’s birth house and a pretentious 1880 basilica in her honor 1/2

      At least the view from the basilica was great! (Last picture) And the mosaic was huge (232 meters square, from the 1st century. First pic) 2/2

        And in case you wonder, the wooden structure on the amphitheater is actually a protection. The amphitheater was exhumed in the 60s (yes!), after being buried for almost 2000 years. And because of the rain and wind, the structure deteriorated quickly.

          It also helps to get a sense of the volume of the initial place (it was fully "circular", but only a half remained). It was a 16.000-20.000 seats amphitheater. This thing was huge!
