      @Christine_Cai27 … something as loose as "an academic career": the rules to succeed at the contest are much clearer and specified than the rules to succeed in academia. So I think it's easier to identify a "winning strategy" with those contests.

    @Christine_Cai27 Even the notion of "success" is clearer with a contest: it's 0 (you don't have the contest) or 1 (you have the contest). So a prépa can compare its training strategy against a somewhat clear outcome (how many students succeed at the contest).

      @Christine_Cai27 For academia, it's much more subtle/nuanced, in the sense that the notion of "success" can vary a lot: for some, it's to land in a R1 institution. For others, it's work-life balance, just finding a job, and so on.
