@Christine_Cai27 It depends on what is "quality" for you. Even though I am not in a top institution, I don't have the feeling to be surrounded by "lesser-quality peer effects". That was the whole point of my (long) thread in fact!

@Christine_Cai27 But what I can agree on is that peers in non-top institutions are of a different nature than peers at top institutions. I don't think we have the same convos in Nancy and in Harvard for instance. But it doesn't mean the ones in Nancy are of a "lesser quality" than those in H.

@Christine_Cai27 At the very end, I don't believe academia is a meritocracy. I'm not saying it's not meritocratic at all, it has some features of a meritocracy. But at the end, you have very little control on your career and "destiny", regardless of your talent and how much you worked.
