    1. At the end, the reason why I don't want to pursue an academic career is because when I'm under pressure, it completely destroys my ability to think. Publish or perish obliterates me. At least, with a job somewhere else I would still be able to think freely about economics.

    I see this as a trade-off of the sort "stay in academia, where I am almost certain to end paralyzed and unable to think" vs "try something else, I may have an interesting job + retain my ability to think about economics".

      In order to be a good thinker, I need (at least perceived) freedom. And I know I can manage to have a job + an intellectual life on the side because this is exactly how my life is these days. It's not perfect (nothing is), but it's clearly good enough for me.

        (Plus, if I make enough money on my job, I would also be able to fund myself to attend a bunch of conferences, workshops, and so on. So why not?)

          (Also, the others reasons why I don't want to stay in academia still hold. And notably, I still want to be able to choose where I live. This is quite challenging with an academic career.)
