    @eckelcc @DinaPomeranz In France, people aren’t recruited after an interview. There’s a committee, where at least half the people is from outside the department. All candidates present something in front of the committee, and the committee ranks them.

      @eckelcc @DinaPomeranz The job is then offered to the highest ranked person, and if the person declines it is offered to the second ranked, and so on until someone accepts it.

        @eckelcc @DinaPomeranz Only occurrences where likability can play a role is when two candidates have a similar profile, and can’t be ranked easily. Usually, outside members of the committee let locals decide the ranking, because « this person may be your colleague for decades ». But it’s quite rare.

          @eckelcc @DinaPomeranz I’m not saying this system is perfect (some still try to « manipulate » the committee for instance), but it seems to give jobs to « underdogs » more easily (at least, a lot of my friends got one and where honestly surprised to be recruited).
