But you’re right Ben, the French ideology toward citizenship and identity makes it really hard to have multiple identities. The French identity requires people to "drop" all their others.

        @ben_golub @O_Goss_ @DinaPomeranz @SZignago I think @Trevornoah got this right, and I support his questioning about hyphenated identities: saying you’re "African" does not automatically imply you’re not French. Which is a stark difference with the far-right, who argues the exact opposite (you’re African OR French).

      @ben_golub @O_Goss_ @DinaPomeranz @SZignago @Trevornoah On a slightly different but still related subject, the French LGBTQ community face a similar issue: any display of LGBTQ identity is perceived as a threat to the nation. It’s an idea that many LGBTQ people themselves have.

    @ben_golub @O_Goss_ @DinaPomeranz @SZignago @Trevornoah On a more personal note, I’ve been raised in this "French identity ideology", but since a few years, I don’t feel French anymore precisely because it’s almost impossible to reconcile different identities. French society push you to choose. And, well, I did choose.
